17 Jan 2010 Subscriber newsletter: The third flaunt
Welcome to the January 2010 lesbian-ebooks newsletter: its purpose is to keep you up-to-date with news from lesbian-ebooks. Firstly, the good news; 'flaunt' and '2flaunt' have had great feedback, and have now been downloaded from the website in thousands; demand has been steady (and roughly equal) since both issues were launched.
But in not-so-good news, editor of the first two 'flaunts', Kate O'Brien, is not very well and unable to continue planning 3flaunt. So we've asked a guest editor to pick up from Kate and prepare the next issue. We hope you'll join us in wishing Kate a speedy recovery.
So, an introduction to Sue Webb, our guest editor for '3flaunt'. Sue is Adelaide-based where she has been involved in the Feast festival literature committee since 1997. In 2008 and 2009 she coordinated the Feast festival's literature events - an enormous job. Born in Kenya, she came to Australia in 1969 and has a broad work experience, including being a factory hand, nanny, and cook. In recent years she has been mainly involved in the book industry: in publishing and distributing books, in owning and operating a bookshop, in being on the collective of the feminist Tantrum Press, and in organising writers events. She has a lot of experience in literature and we're very much looking forward to working with her on 3flaunt.
Which leads us to a call for manuscripts for '3flaunt': Sue is now looking for manuscripts from a wide prospective, fiction to 3 000 words, poetry to any length. If you are unsure if your piece is suitable email Sue at editor@lesbian-ebooks.com.au Deadline is still to be finalised but probably around mid 2010. Please note: we are not able to pay royalties at this time - but what we can offer you is a professional presentation of your work to many thousands of readers, world wide.
New titles now on release:
'Feast 2009' is a collection of all the winners and highly commended authors from this year's short writing competition. First prize went to Mij Tanith for 'A Winter's Tale'; Second to Anna Solding; Third to Amelia Penery; and the highly commendeds: Tarion Keelan, Megan Hammond and Peter Mitchell. A high standard of work all around - do check it out. Available from our new releases page right now and for free!
'Out of the box', an anthology of Australian lesbian and gay poetry, (in a real paperback book) is having further launches: at Midsumma in Melbourne (2 February www.midsumma.org.au ) and at the Sydney Mardi Gras festival, (26 February www.mardigras.org.au ). There's quite a line-up of poets scheduled to read, including editors Jill Jones and Michael Farrell.
Also due shortly is the '2010 New Mardi Gras Short Story competition' - all winners and highly commended place getters. As it's yet to be judged we don't know who's won (it closed on 4 January) but based on previous collections likely to be a great read. Theme is 'History of the World'; short stories only; in 750 words. If you're in Sydney the winners will be announced 6.30pm, Tues 23 February, at The Winery, 285A Crown st, Surry Hills... we'll publish soon after this date. In the meantime the winning collections from the past three years are available from our front page. LM

December 2009 Publishing world: Picaro Press
[from gay-ebooks news] Picaro Press have been quietly publishing chapbooks of Australian poetry since 2001. Their backlist includes many family favourites from Dorothy Porter to Jenni Nixon. Being small, they're not expensive, so checkout the site - www.picaropress.com - and buy yourself a collection of recent Oz poets' work for less than the cost of a single imported paperback. GD
13-16 December 2009 New release: Feast Writing Comp 2009
24 November 2009Feast Festival
[from gay-ebooks news] We're just back from a couple of days in sun-baked South Australia with a load of new books to read. Those Adelaide possums certainly know how to stage literary events. You start with a decent heritage-listed venue - in this case Saldechin, a converted Victorian-era bank, with comfy lounges and acoustics to die for.
One of the unexpected highlights of our weekend was the Language of Song session which featured local songwriters both talking about and performing their own works. Coming from a city with a strong alternative cabaret tradition, the overall standard was high. Although seasoned performers, nothing could hide a look of adolescent glee as each realised the potential of the marble walls and high ceiling in terms of acoustics. They all went for broke & delivered really powerful performances.
There were a number of launches: Teri Louise Kelly and Kimberley Mann both launched poetry collections.
Susan Sheridan launched the long-awaited Out of the Box, an anthology of work by contemporary Australian lesbian and gay poets. (top picture, left to right: Susan with editors Michael Farrell and Jill Jones)
For us, the highlight was the announcement of the winners and highly commendeds in Feast's National Short Writing Competition. First prize, with a real gem of a story, went to Mij Tanith [bottom picture, left, with Anna Solding (2nd) and Megan Hammond (HC)]. The pdf will be shortly be available for free from this site. Do check it out. Going by the stories read during the session, it should be a great read. GD
Your feedback is always welcome
